Senator Ben Sasse joined the Nebraska National Guard for their early morning training last week. But he’s not just doing this for the workout – he’s joining the National Guard at Camp Ashland for the morning in an effort to raise awareness about the national security implications of America’s fitness crisis.

According to data from the Pentagon, almost three-quarters of Americans between the ages of 17 and 24 are ineligible to join the military, even if they volunteered. The largest reason why? Health issues – especially obesity.

As Sasse says, “We need to recognize that brain is every bit – and more important – than brawn in the long term. And yet, we’re talking about war. And so all our men and women who are going to serve have to be prepared to serve in real war, and that requires physical readiness.”
